Somerden, Tonbridge Road - Architecture Project

Somerden, Tonbridge Road

The project involved the conversion of an existing agricultural barn into a characterful residential dwelling within a scenic rural setting. The intention of the design was to bring new life into a dated masonry building which was in need of significant restoration.

The proposal forms a central core with an open plan kitchen dining and living area to the south; utilizing natural light and the stunning views. To the north of the building is a family room and other spaces including a study, boot room and WC.

The scheme creates a double height atrium which is connected by the feature staircase and viewing gallery adjacent to the first floor bedrooms overlooking the living area. On the second floor level the scheme makes use of the vaulted roof, introducing fun creative spaces for the family to enjoy.

Energy efficiency and sustainable design was a priority, ensuring materials were reused to their maximum potential. The appearance of the conversion seeks to retain the rustic character of the building with crittall style window frames, the corrugated roof covering and careful detailing of the timber cladding.
